5 Alpine Experiences you can only have in Sun Peaks

December 19, 2017 Sun Peaks has been a Skican favourite since our inception. It is Canada's second largest ski area with so much to offer.
1. Alpine Fondue and Starlight Descent
Sun Peaks takes the modern fondue to the next level. With European roots, the fondue is a staple at many ski resorts, but Sun Peaks takes the fondue experience to another level. The Alpine Fondue and Starlight Descent begins with an exclusive twilight chairlift ride up to the newly renovated Sunburst Bar and Eatery at 6,069 feet, where Swiss chef Hans Stierli’s fondue experience awaits. Of course, while the Swiss are known for precision watches and quality knives, they also exceed expectations in rich cheeses and decadent chocolate. To top the night off, guests don their headlamps and descend the freshly groomed 5-Mile run by star and moonlight – a magical experience found only in Sun Peaks.

2. Ski with Canada’s female athlete of the Century. Ski legend Nancy Greene Raine will take you on a free tour.

Nancy Greene Raine has chosen to call Sun Peaks home since 1994. With numerous World Cup and Olympic medals, who better to get a few skiing tips from? Nancy is on the mountain most weekends and holidays and invites guests to meet and ski with her at designated times. Nancy loves to share her love for the sport with everyone – regardless of skiing ability. She will tailor the runs (and the tips) to your skiing ability, so be sure to join her and enjoy a couple of hours of complimentary guided runs.

3. 360-degree ski experience
Convenient connectivity of three mountains lets you explore more.
Sun Peaks is surrounded by three majestic mountains – Tod, Sundance, and Morrisey– all of which are connected by numerous ski runs. Take advantage of this connectivity to navigate the perimeter of the ski area and get the full Sun Peaks experience. With 135 runs to explore over these three mountains, you will want to plan ample time to explore!

4. Gil’s backcountry experience
Sun Peaks’ legendary powder paradise is just a short walk away.
Another experience to add to your bucket list – Gil’s inbounds backcountry runs. In 2014, this legendary backcountry terrain was added to Sun Peaks’ already seemingly endless terrain, elevating Sun Peaks to Canada’s 2nd largest ski area. With the area now patrolled and under avalanche control, guests can experience the beauty of the backcountry and untracked lines in a safe environment.

5. Test your speed as part of the FIS World Cup of Skiing event
One of the steepest runs in Sun Peaks will be groomed to perfection.
Each March, the popular mogul run Headwalls is groomed to perfection for athletes from around the world to compete in North America’s only FIS World Cup of Skiing event. Spectators have witnessed athletes reaching speeds of up to 175km/h in eight seconds. If just spectating isn’t enough to get your heart pumping, enter a test of speed in the “So you think you are fast, eh” offshoot event. While the starting gates may be positioned a little lower on the mountain, rest assured you will still have plenty of opportunities to reach your maximum speed!
