Zermatt is a picturesque mountain village that lies at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn on the border of Switzerland and Italy. Considered one of Switzerland's most popular winter resorts, Zermatt encompasses three skiing areas, which enjoy superb snow conditions and the longest skiing season in the Alps.
This world-famous destination offers visitors an never-ending range of activities to choose from. Aside from skiing, which is available 365 days a year on the Theodul Glacier, Zermatt is a popular destination for hiking and mountaineering in the off-season.
The charming village of Zermatt includes a range of cultural attractions, including the Matterhorn Museum and its historic Old Village. And if you ever run out of things to do, you can also go across the border! From the top of the Klein Matterhorn, serviced by Europe's highest cable car, you can ski down into Italy for lunch and return in time for dinner.
The Sunnegga-Rothorn ski area is the first of the major peaks surrounding the village of Zermatt and offering access to ski pistes in the winter. The view from the Rothorn is located at 3,103 m and showcases the highest peaks of the Valais Alps. It is accessible via cable car.
Gornergrat
The Gornergrat is the second of the major peaks surrounding the village of Zermatt. With an altitude of 3,089 m, Gornergrat is accessible 365 days a year via the Gornergrat Bahn, Europe’s highest open-air cog railway.
At the summit station on the Gornergrat, visitors will also find Europe’s highest-altitude hotel: the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat. Facilities include a restaurant, astronomical observatory, and attractive shops. Spending the night here is a wonderful experience.
Klein Matterhorn
The Klein Matterhorn is accessible via the highest cable car station in Europe at 3,883 m. With its new restaurant, this destination sets fresh standards in sustainable development. The views of the highest mountains in Italy, France and Switzerland are breathtaking and the ski area on the Theodul Glacier is open 365 days a year.
Breuil-Cervinia-Valtournenche | Italy
Breuil-Cervinia-Valtournenche are ski villages in the Valle d’Aosta region of northern Italy, located on the southern slopes of the Matterhorn. Guests at Zermatt have access to these Italian neighbours and the Plateau Rosa glacier from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car, allowing them to explore both areas with the purchase of an international ski pass.
